Verifying Hospital Accreditation
To ensure that our members have access to quality-based hospitals,
Preferred Choices PPO requires that all participating hospitals
attain accreditation through the Joint Commission on Accreditation
of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) or the American Osteopathic
Association (AOA).
Preferred Choices PPO carefully evaluates the credentials of all
participating hospitals at least once every three years for conformity
with Preferred Choices participation standards.
Hospitals are required to:
- Be in good standing with State and Federal regulatory organizations(
JCAHO, AOA)
- Undergo facility review (if not in good standing with State
and Federal regulatory organizations)
- Implement recommendations for process improvements
- Participate in the adoption of recognized patient safety guidelines
and standards
Preferred Choices PPO encourages all consumers to become better
educated about how hospitals meet accreditation standards, including
what is required in the accreditation process.

Hospital Care
Preferred Choices PPO encourages you to take an active role in
seeking information about the hospital(s) at which your physician
or specialist has admitting privileges. Before you are admitted,
it is important to learn information about the facility. We encourage
you to call the facility with questions such as:
- When did the hospital participate in an accreditation process
by a hospital review board?
- What accreditation status did it achieve? And when? (Joint
Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO),
Michigan Health and Hospital Association (MHA), etc.)
- Does the hospital have any information regarding consumer satisfaction?
- What is the hospital's experience in providing treatment for
conditions similar to yours?
- You may also want to consider facility experiences of family
and friends.
By obtaining answers to these and other important quality concerns,
you can make sure that the hospital care you receive is right for
you
